For Rapture of Ravens: Read for FREE!

After the fateful Battle of Fulford Gate, Coenred is forced to take what warriors survive the slaughter and head for Tadcaster. He must leave Mildryth, the woman he has come to love, in York, a city now captured and ruled by the Vikings. Deserted by his lords, Edwin and Morcar, Coenred hopes to keep one eye on the city and the other on the road south, hoping to see the King of England marching north.

Mildryth must fight her own battles alone. Friends have lost their men. Vikings walk the streets, little minding the station of the Saxon women. A fragile truce is being strained each and every day.

Against all expectations King Harold of England arrives in the north of his kingdom leading a huge army. He is grateful to meet with Coenred, recognising in him a man of worth and a warrior of experience. Using Coenred’s knowledge Harold plots the recapture of York and a surprise attack on the Vikings at Stamford Bridge. The news that Tostig, his own brother, has joined forces with their ancient enemy, saddens him, but Harold is resolved to meet the foe in a bloody contest.

For Coenred parting once more from Mildryth is a bitter pill to swallow, but in King Harold he has found a man whose nobility puts Edwin and Morcar to shame. Once more he is to the fray, to stand with his king before the banners of their enemy. Mildryth knows that fate spared him once, she is not so convinced that he will escape unhurt a second time, not least because this will prove to be the largest battle that Saxons have ever fought against the Vikings.
