When Guillaume, Duke of Normandy, lands in England he is ignorant of the whereabouts of King Harold. Keen to bring the Saxons to battle the Normans capture Hastings and ravage the local area, enacting vile outrages on the local people.
News of the invasion reaches Harold in York, even as he celebrates the Saxons greatest ever victory over the Vikings at Stamford Bridge. Harold calls all Saxons swords to his banner and marches south to save his kingdom.
Coenred was severely wounded at Stamford Bridge, but is hale and hearty enough to answer his king’s call. Only, he had looked to hang up his sword, take Mildryth to his family’s estate, and live out the rest of his life as a theign. For her part, Mildryth knows that great men will always look to entice a formidable warrior like her Coenred to their cause. She knows, however, that the danger is real. If Coenred fights it will be as much to protect her as to save the king’s crown.
On a ridge north of Hastings Harold draws a powerful shieldwall. Before them come the Normans. Duke Guillaume has to gamble everything on one encounter. Early morning passes into the evening as the blood of many men is spilt. Death is the only certainty. Victory is but a dream for both Harold and Guillaume. For Coenred, bound by the death-oath of the huscarl, his fate will be to either rescue the corpse of his lord or die trying. In the north, Mildryth awaits the Blade’s Fell Blow on the man she loves.
