The battle is done and the Anglo-Saxons have fled the bloody field. North of York, Coenred meets up with the remnants of the Saxon army. He also reunites Eorl Morcar with his elder brother, Eorl Edwin. Despite their lust for glory the two noblemen decide to abandon the people of York to their enemies. They are all for fleeing to the safety of distant Durham. Ever ruled by his own sense of honour, Coenred cannot turn his back so easily. First, he sees to the men who have made it to this safe haven. Second, he plans to undertake another dangerous mission to discover what fate might befall the people of York, and perhaps more importantly, what King Hardrada might do next.
