Time for just one digression on the eve of the battle. Wulfhere is coming to believe that his luck has all turned to bad. His last encounter with Mildryth did not go the way he felt he had a right to expect. In consideration of how she has come to blight his life it might not be surprising that the outlaw now convinces himself that she is a witch and that they only way he can free himself from her mark is to kill her. Before he can even plan such an event, however, Wulfhere experiences a rather strange encounter in the heart of a forest with a man and his daughter.
