It is an inevitable part of war that warriors, no matter how brave or accomplished, will die. Alfrid’s death has the added touch of tragedy because his youth. Together, his comrades hold a funeral for him. Their numbers have decreased again, but the estimation in which the young huscarl was held has increased. Coenred and his brothers will see Alfrid’s funeral urn, along with all of his possessions, transported to his family’s home in Mercia.
