My new idea gives me the opportunity to write that story without having to labour any of the points. In the same way it will encompass other subjects that interest me regarding the human condition, loneliness, isolation, rejection, futility, love, friendship, and many more. The combination of all these ideas is giving me a sense of literary danger, originality, and total escapism. It has gotten me excited about writing again!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
I very much enjoyed the 1987 movie starring Steve Martin and John Candy, but that is not what I am writing about. In my book, Eugenica, the protagonists use planes, trains, and automobiles to escape their pursuers. Well, actually they use the singular of each of those modes of transport. One plane, a De Havilland … Continue reading Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
This Fantasy Thing
Well, The Queen of the Mountain Kingdom (hereafter known as QMK) is almost finished. I expect to have the book published to Kindle this weekend. I will not be advertising the fact, however. My attention is going to be centred elsewhere for at least a week, other things are happening in my life, good things … Continue reading This Fantasy Thing
Considering Putting Down the Pen
I was wondering lately if it was all worth it? The writing I mean. It takes up a lot of my time. When I am not writing I am thinking about writing. I meditate on plots, characters, themes, stories. What I do not seem to spend a lot of time on is the one thing … Continue reading Considering Putting Down the Pen
Music, Writing, and What to Listen To
I love music. I doubt that making such a declaration would surprise anyone. All the people I know love music too. I might not like their particular taste, but that is not important. Music is and has been for as long as I can remember, a part of my life. I was no good at … Continue reading Music, Writing, and What to Listen To
A New Guy on the Block
Recuperation seems to be as time intensive as undergoing medical procedures. I get the feeling that once the frame was removed from my leg there many things that I just wanted to get back on with. Normality was the motivation. I wanted to get back to normal and do normal things. Like washing the pots … Continue reading A New Guy on the Block
Following the Muse and not the Market
September is coming to a close and I have not done anywhere near as much work as I had hoped. My recent surgery and the many complications that have arisen as a result of it certainly have not helped. However, I do not feel like having another moan. Although I have been somewhat discomfited by … Continue reading Following the Muse and not the Market
Fiction is an Escape from Reality
Fiction, any kind of fiction is an escape from reality. It is not a question of genre it is a question of need. Human beings need to escape every once and a while into their own imagination. This is hardly earth-shattering news, it has been discussed previously by more eminent commentators than me but it … Continue reading Fiction is an Escape from Reality
Take Science Fiction
When I was younger Science Fiction was one particular genre that always fascinated me. I was a fan of Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury and such. I found their alternative worlds rich in texture and imagination, even the darker tales. I have to admit to enjoying 'space opera' as well, a sub-genre that is … Continue reading Take Science Fiction
Story writing is just make-believe recorded by the written word
On Saturday I sat down at my computer and restarted work on my fourth novel, ‘The Blade’s Fell Blow’. I was surprised how easy it was. Admittedly I had spent some time organising my work before actually sitting down and starting to write again, and this helped enormously. I knew where all my files where, … Continue reading Story writing is just make-believe recorded by the written word
