I joined a Facebook group that was for book lovers as I thought that I might find some new readers there, but it has proven to be a frustrating experience. Yes, many of the members are lovers of books, but very few extend that appreciation to the people how write them. Indeed, authors seem to be largely ignored, unless they are already successful and famous.

The most disappointing characteristic of this group was how many readers love books so much that they want them cheap or, even better, for free. I know, it is an attitude that exists across the whole of society these days, but I still find it rather depressing.

Book lovers seem somewhat different to other media fans. Film lovers, of which I am one, generally extend their interest beyond the actual movie. Many of them take the time to learn about the actors, directors, and even the writers of their favourite films. Some go further and look at how films are made, exploring the whole creative process. The self-declared book lovers that I have encountered so far do not seem to want to go so far as to connecting with the author, unless, as I have already stated, they are famous.

I find it rather strange that some people have an obsession for a work of creativity that is limited entirely to the thing itself. I have never felt like that when indulging my own interests in music, films, theatre, literature, and art. Knowing more about the subject adds depth to your understanding, helps place things in context, and can result in greater enjoyment of it; connecting with the people involved in the creative process even more so.

  1. I can relate to this. I felt proud and happy that I had achieved something when my book was first published, then the reality hit home….no one knows it’s out there so you have to market it! I hate trying to sell myself, and as you say the reading public want it for free or very cheap , it all leads to a disappointing experience for me the writer and a huge drop in confidence. But that’s the commercial world we live in sadly.
