Susan Osbourne is a poet with a very perceptive sense of humour that turns even mundane events into happy vignettes of honest comedy. It is perhaps inevitable that she will be compared to Pam Ayres, a comedic poet from the 1970’s, not least because they have more than humour in their writing to connect them. Both use the culture and dialect of where they grew up to great effect in their poetry. This is where the honesty comes from. An experience of either Berkshire or Lancashire is not a prerequisite to enjoying either poet’s work, just an ability to recognise the humour inherent in the stories that they tell, for example, I have never felt compelled to write about having a bad hair day, but Susan Osbourne did, and produced four short verses on the nature of having an obsessive/ compulsive behaviour resulting in always brushing her hair.
